This video is a response to the Honda Main Relay video that I did. I’ve had a couple of people come to me with questions about no start conditions and how they should go about fixing them. This video is a starting point to a series that I plan to cover on this subject. The point I make in the video over and over is, don’t make assumptions. Assumptions get expensive and can frustrate you to the point of homicide, follow these simple tips and it will lead you down the path of success.

It’s not common for …
It’s not common for those computers to go bad without some outside force, i.e. water damage. Keep an eye on it for a while to make sure you really solved the problem.

Well what are you …
Well what are you missing from what I went over in the video? Spark? Fuel? or timing? Lets start with that.

Timing can cause …
Timing can cause your car not to start but I’m not sure that is the case with what you described. It sounds like you have a failure in the ignition system that I would look into before I went for timing, in other words find out why you don’t have spark before you worry about timing. As for the plug, wait till you get the car running again and get it nice and hot, then try and remove it, there may be little hope and you might need to have a new threads installed after you remove it. Good luck.

my engine is …
my engine is cranking but not starting
if i am not getting any spark, could 1 thing b that i just need timing adjusted or changing the whole timing belt?do u have any videos that show how 2 do timing?also 1 of my spark plugs is either blown or i have a stripped thread could that b another reason why my car isn’t starting?n i cant even take out the spark plug, other ones come out easily,do u know any tools besides a socket that would take it out?

Have you checked …
Have you checked for fuel? Also check the spark timing.

First, distributors …
First, distributors don’t go bad all that often but ignition coils and igniters do which live inside the distributor, it’s just easier to replace the whole thing I suppose for those who don’t want to take the time to diagnose the problem. Second, when the tech installed the distributor they needed to re-time the engine, if they didn’t it could have caused the issue that your talking about. In other words, check the timing but it wouldn’t hurt to check the battery also.

last week i got my …
what u think?
last week i got my tune up on my 95 honda civic then days later it wouldnt’ start. i got it towed to the shop and he said i needed a new distributor so i got that fixed. my car has been firing up immediately 2 days straight but now it doesnt start up immediately anymore. im starting to think my car was misdiagnosed by the mechanic. do u think i need a new battery? it sounds like its struggling to start then it starts. prior to the tune up i jumped somebody’s nissan altima

In my opinion it is …
In my opinion it is the most important rule in diagnosis, unfortunately the more you do this the more you have a tendency to make assumptions, a vicious cycle.

I enjoyed the video …
I enjoyed the video! I especially admired the fact that you emphasized “don’t make assumptions.” I have witnessed people make assumptions where I work, and it sucks, but people have to pay the price for their actions.

I use the same …
I use the same method and tool I used in this video, I just unfasten the coil and clip to a ground.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:15 am
how do you check …
how do you check spark coming out the coil packs without a scope ?

You have to be …
You have to be careful with starting fluid, it’s actually ether and very flammable. I’ve used brake clean before to get a car rolling.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:15 am
Why not use …
Why not use starting fluid? I guess we want a clean engine?
December 7th, 2009 at 5:15 am
Yea, I’ve done it …
Yea, I’ve done it may times, I don’t like pushing either if I can help it.

No, it’s not legal. …
No, it’s not legal. You can’t modify emissions equipment at all, and they don’t always run better.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:15 am
Yes, you’ll …
Yes, you’ll probably kill the cat if nothing else. Misfires are not good for an engine.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:15 am
Eric, is it really …
Eric, is it really okay to use gum cutter in the place of starting fluid to start a car. Sometimes, we have to move an SUV or truck with a bad fuel pump. Instead of pushing it, I climb onto the hood and spray a contiuous stream of gum cutter into the intake while someone else starts and drives the vehicle. Gum cutter is okay, right. Just checking.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:15 am
Eric, is it legal …
Eric, is it legal to hollow out the insides of a catalytic converter (if it is clogged)? Of course it will fail emissions, but is it legal to do so? The engine runs better with a hollow catalytic converter compared to a clogged catalytic converter.

Eric, can you cause …
Eric, can you cause further damage by driving a car with an engine that has bent valves.

Ask someone from …
Ask someone from your local law enforcement agency.
